30 Under 30
ARTIST STATEMENT Born in Manchester, England in 1991 to Ghanaian immigrant parents, I attempt to use my lived experiences as a first generation Brit to explore cultural identity, the concept of ‘belonging’ and human behaviour in contemporary society. I use 35mm photography to focus on these factors, as well as focusing on the sense of self and where I fit in as a spectator, and as an artist. With a strong focus on people, their surroundings and the everyday nature of existence, my work aims to use simplicity to explore the notion of 'being'. Travelling plays a pivotal role in my photographs and I have shot bodies of work in a variety of European and most recently, African locations. I firmly believe in the power of artists on the continent & in the diaspora creating new narratives through mediums such as photography and film. As well as looking at the present, I also use vernacular photography and archives to learn more about colonial Africa, with a particular focus on British colonial rule & its legacy in Ghana.
